I was inspired to write “Bliss Lullaby” after singing at my first bedside. When we entered the room the client was sleeping so we started humming quietly. She woke up after we finished our first song. She started repeating that she was scared and did not know why. She also started asking for relatives that would never come. The nurse held her hand and tried to calm her.
Our song leader motioned to us to start humming quietly again. She visibly calmed when we started singing again and she eventually fell back asleep. It was powerful to see our music be able to express something words couldn’t. I realized that we often say a client falling asleep while we sing is the greatest honor; however, I didn’t know of any songs in our repertoire that said that explicitly. I recorded the song on the drive home and later had help writing the melodies. I hope this song will help express that sleep is not only encouraged while we sing; it’s honored.
Lyrics
It’s okay to go to sleep.
It’s okay to close your eyes.
There’s nothing to fear, for I’m right here.
You’re not alone.
Angels watch you while you sleep,
And they sing you lullabies.
There’s nothing to fear, for they’re right here.
Just close your eyes.
You’re not alone.
Alternate lyrics for verse 2:
I’ll be with you while you sleep,
And I’ll sing you lullabies.
There’s nothing to fear, for I’m right here.
Just close your eyes.
You’re not alone.
