A friend of mine suffers with mental illness. She was quite distraught, longing for an end to her pain, and I wasn’t at all sure she would survive. I wrote this as a love offering to her. After her crisis passed and I realized it might be a useful Threshold Choir song, I subtly changed the lyrics of the last verse to reflect that when the loved one has died, the light of mutual love continues to burn, helping the ones who grieve.
Keep the timing loose… it’s about the FEEL of the song, not the notation.

Lyrics
I will keep a candle burning long after day is gone.
There’s a candle in the window of my heart, my dear.
And when the darkness is around you, I’ll hold the light up high.
I will keep a candle burning for you, dear.
ALTERNATE VERSE:
I will keep a candle burning long after you are gone.
There’s a candle in the window of my heart, my dear.
And when the darkness is around me, I’ll hold your light up high.
I will keep a candle burning for you, dear.
