As soon as I read it, I knew I wanted my choruses to sing a variation of this quote by Macrina Wiederkehr: “O God, help me to believe the truth about myself, no matter how beautiful it is.” A simple 2-part round, I taught it to people of all ages, and sometimes repeated it many times if I saw tears of release in the eyes of the singers. I found Sister Macrina at the Benedictine monastery St. Scholastica in Ft. Smith, Arkansas and sent her a recording of the song. She loved it so much that she asked me to create a companion CD for her next book “Seven Sacred Pauses, Living Mindfully Through the Hours of the Day,” which was published in 2007. I read the unpublished manuscript and chose sentences for 18 songs, and the CD “Seven Sacred Pauses, Singing Mindfully Dawn Through Dark” was released that same year. Among those songs were “I Look into my Heart“, “Put Everything in Order”, and “The Truth“. (words: Macrina Wiederkehr, music: Velma Frye) Before her death in 2020, Macrina led retreats internationally and published 8 books.

Lyrics

Put everything in order as day begins to fade.
Put everything in order as day begins to fade.
All things are passing,
Moment by moment, breath by breath.
All things are passing,
Moment by moment, birth to death.
Take off that cloak of fear.
The Divine strength you seek is here.
And you know you are dying to live.
You know you are dying to live.
