This song came about because I wanted to write a song for our choir, the Ithaca Hospicare Threshold Choir.  Songs most often come to me when I am meditating, and it was, in fact, in a “quiet moment “ when I heard the first two lines, with lyrics and music together.  I kept singing those two lines until the rest of that verse arrived. In the second verse, I thought of evening as the latter part of life as well as the latter part of a day and because this song is about quietly rejoicing, I thought of secrets, which are often whispered.

Our choir sings it bedside with just the melody or with one singer on melody and the other parts on “ooh”.  We also recorded it with three singers for a SongBath that we did for our local Hospice.

Lyrics

In the quiet moments, I hear a voice that calls to me.
In the quiet moments, I hear a voice that calls.
In the quiet moments, I hear a voice,
singing softly, rejoice, rejoice.
In the quiet moments, I hear a voice that calls.

In the evening, there is a firelight that glows for me.
In the evening, there is a firelight that glows.
In the evening, there is a firelight
burning brightly all through the night.
In the evening, there is a firelight that glows.

In my heart, there is a secret that is known by me.
In my heart, there is a secret that I know.
It’s that none of us is here alone,
and in the end we’re all going home.
In my heart, there is a secret that I know.
