Member Age Policy

Threshold Choir requires members to be at least 18 years of age to become a member of any chapter.

Based on:

Issues of HIPAA liability
Child safety / liability
Impacts to dynamics of the group
- May stifle deep personal sharing
- May impede discussions, disagreements or difficult topics being brought forward and discussed without censorship, in real time
A chapter should not be responsible for a child’s understanding of death and dying – can’t know in advance what content will arise
Child can’t participate in our main mission of singing bedside / facilities served don’t allow volunteers under 18

Threshold will consider membership for people 16-17 provided:

The chapter leader or leadership team meets with the underage child and parent. There is agreement that the underage child has the maturity to participate, and no chapter member objects
The child must have a chapter member as sponsor (parent, relative, friend) who attends any practice the underage child attends – this ensures the child has a safe person to debrief with for any difficult topics that may arise
The parent signs a permission form to allow their child to participate and takes full responsibility for their participation and any issues that may arise
There is an understanding that the underage member will not sing at bedside
The underage person will be subject to the same intake process as any other prospective member
Final approval will come from the home office

This policy relates only to membership and does not prohibit children from attending practice as necessary on occasion. Regular attendance by children is a decision that can be made chapter by chapter but should involve a discussion among all members. Members and/or chapter leaders can contact the Member & Chapter Development Director with any concerns.

Threshold Membership for 16-17 year old:
